Challengers of the Arc: Japanese Elusive 50-Year Quest at Longchamp.

Kanichi Kusano observes, “If you’re living in Japan and pick up a sports newspaper, the top three activities appear. First is baseball, next is sumo, and the third is the sport of kings. The sport is ubiquitous, and these athletes are stunning. There is drama and romance, and a challenge to the Arc as Japan has pursued victory for half a century. That explains the nation are deeply connected.”

Renewed Ambition

For thousands of Japanese racing fans making the 12,000-mile round trip plus additional viewers tuning in back home, the moment has arrived as usual. Since Speed Symboli, Japan’s pioneer contender at the Arc, finished 11th in 1969, 32 more attempted without success. At Longchamp, additional challengers – the latest hopefuls – will make the attempt.

One standout case of persistence despite repeated setbacks, it’s nearly unmatched globally. Supporters of England might complain regarding their own drought, however, the team can claim a global title. Over the last 30 years, Japan’s racing industry has developed as the wealthiest and top-performing internationally. Yet the result despite massive investment and countless journeys is a string of frustrating outcomes.

Heartbreak and Near-Misses

  • El Condor Pasa finished half a length behind Montjeu having led to the final strides.
  • The legendary Deep Impact, who drew tens of thousands, nearly triumphed that year before being disqualified over a drug violation.
  • An unexpected challenger lost by a mere head Workforce.
  • The 2012 favorite charged into a clear lead a furlong out but wandered and was chased down by Solemia.

Heavy going combined with misfortune, with the draw and in the race, have contributed in the string of losses. Entrants familiar with lightning-fast going at home often struggle on the deep ground typically found this time of year. However, Kusano thinks it has also been part of a learning process. “For an owner taking a classic race, normally they will think: ‘The Arc is possible,’ yet that isn’t true while it seems alike, the challenges are unique.

“Racing surfaces in Japan is really flat with domestic runners developed into sprint specialists, abroad, a sturdier type, since the ground looks green and smooth in reality, it feels different. This is why trainers and owners have researched extensively to prepare runners which both run on smooth ground with added stamina.

2024's Trio

Notably the latest entrants in the upcoming race experienced an almost European training regimen: time off in summer followed by a prep race. This isn’t the most numerous group that Japan has fielded for this race – four runners in 2022 were spread out further back – yet they possess notable depth.

Is success imminent for the devoted supporters are rewarded for their indefatigable devotion for these athletes.

“Fundamentally, betting is restricted nationally with just four officially approved gambling sports, one of which is the turf,” he adds. “But the Japan Racing Association has succeeded in rebranding the sport beyond wagering into a broader entertainment accessible to all, uniting enthusiasts to the events in a different way compared to elsewhere.

“For local supporters, as top competitors lining up, of course people will travel, to feel part of the drama. Success abroad and Dubai in numerous locations on comparable tracks, and this is the box the final goal for a long time.”
