Daily Reality in the Sights of Chinese ‘Guam Killer’ Missiles

Similar to most inhabitants of the island, Jacqueline Guzman is accustomed to learning about security concerns linked to the Chinese government. Despite escalating frictions in the Western Pacific, a lot of residents prioritize daily expenses as opposed to defense issues.

She notes that her primary worry is paying bills, and she holds faith in the American authorities to provide her security.

However that feeling of safety was shaken recently when news broke of a high-profile military parade in China, where cutting-edge weaponry was unveiled—among them a ballistic weapon nicknamed the Guam-targeting missile by Chinese media.

In addition, the appearance of the Chinese leader together with the leaders of the Russian Federation, Pyongyang, Tehran and allied states indicated a new geopolitical alignment that some view as a serious threat.

“Based on reports, almost everyone in the Pacific needs to be concerned,” says Frank Whitman, in his seventies, who lives close to the main base of the Guam national guard.

“However there is nothing that can be done.”

Situated roughly 3,000km off the coast of China, the territory serves as a critical military outpost for the American forces in the Pacific and contains a large defense installation. Analysts note that should China attempt to annex Taiwan, the island would almost certainly become a frontline in any potential war.

Consequently, displays of China’s growing armed strength—including strategic missiles, laser defenses and four-legged devices—draw attention across the island.

“The island is a essential operational site for the United States in the Asia-Pacific,” states a spokesperson for the defense operation.

The officer emphasizes that the zone is among the most ‘consequential’ for US interests and that armed services are “prepared to protect American soil here on Guam.”

With that in mind, the United States is constructing an upgraded defense network said to offer 360-degree coverage for Guam. Per a recently released statement, the multi-billion dollar system is scheduled to be finished within a decade.

“The public should be aware of the risk, although not overly anxious,” notes a former defense analyst, stating that Beijing’s military have outpaced the United States in some capabilities.

“In the event that Beijing select their timings and targets strategically… they could significantly damage defense operations,” the commentator warns.

Nevertheless, the expert argues that the armed services continues to be capable and well-equipped against China’s new weaponry.

As well as the missiles, the appearance of China’s leader seen with the heads of North Korea and Russia at the military event prompted fresh unease among various in the territory.

One resident says that she once felt unconcerned about Beijing—before the “joint public appearance” of Vladimir Putin, Kim Jong-un and China’s president. This, she adds, indicates “stronger political ties and cooperation” among the countries.

“This can reshape regional and global diplomacy and make collaborative efforts easier. It’s alarming because it could represent a strategic partnership,” the specialist says.

Local officials, however, continue to insist that defending Guam is of paramount importance to the US military.

Elected official one lawmaker, who chairs the policy group, explains that the island leadership is provided security updates from US military officials and that the security of the territory is addressed “with the utmost seriousness.”

“Residents’ responsibility is to remain calm, informed and cooperative, confident that the right mechanisms are in place to provide for our security.”
